Why ora-heal?

As you will see when you browse the rest of our site there are many reasons for choosing oraheal......

Aside from no harsh chemicals oraheal does not contain hydrated silica... the abrasive found in all major name brand toothpastes. Hydrated silica is very abrasive to the tooth enamel and causes what is known in dentistry as root abrasion, or toothbrush abrasion.
The term toothbrush abrasion is actually a misnomer because it is in fact toothpaste abrasion. In any event this abrasion is the cause of one of the most common treatments in dentistry(40% of treatment): Root veneers, or buccal veneers as they are called in the profession.

Hydrated Silica and abrasion

Abrasive compounds make up more than 60% of the volume of all toothpastes. The reason we use calcium carbonate and white clay is because their abrasive power is not enough to damage the teeth, whereas hydrated silica(sand/ground glass/quartz)  is abrasive enough to do so.

The most simple analogy is to be found on 'MOH's' scale of hardness (see table on right)
The scale is based on ten minerals that are all readily available.
The hardest known naturally occurring substance when the scale was made: diamonds, are at top of the scale. The hardness of a material is measured against the scale by finding the hardest material that the given material can scratch, and/or the softest material that can scratch the given material. The Mohs scale of mineral hardness characterizes the scratch resistance of various minerals through the ability of a harder material to scratch a softer material.

Silica's hardness is about 7 (quartz) and tooth is 5 (apatite)
So you can see that Silica is more abrasive than a tooth and can thus wear it away. Calcium carbonate (calcite) and White clay hardness is 3 to 4 so it will gently scrub, polish and nourish teeth without causing the abrasion problems of mainstream silica based toothpastes. Calcite cannot wear away the tooth, which is why it is the crystal of choice in oraheal.
